An interesting quote I read today from Gregg Easterbrook:

In national news, Tuesday is the inauguration of Barack Obama as 44th president of the United States. We’ve been so wrapped up in various forms of financial panic, real or imagined, that some may have lost sight of what a great day this is for America. Regardless of whether Obama ultimately proves to be an outstanding president or an average chief executive or a dud, only in America could this happen. A country whose eternal shame is that it once held slaves elects a black man as its leader, and a black man who came from nothing, entirely self-made. Obama is so appealing because he is the embodiment of the American story — and that story is still in the early chapters. Today every American, even those who exercised their right to oppose Obama, should beam with pride. Until now I felt proudest to be an American on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong put his foot on the moon. I thought then, “No other nation can accomplish such a thing, no other nation can dream so big.” Today I feel prouder, because Obama represents a much grander and more important dream. Today America proves to the world that we meant what we said about freedom and equality.

Taste We Can Believe In

I read this quote from Obama yesterday and it made me laugh.  I found it on another blog, so although I trust it is legit, it could be a misquote.  See if you can catch what made me crack up.

“My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you’ll join with me as we try to change it.” – Barack Obama

Politik

October 27th, 2008

Last night I ate dinner at The Barrel Room, and at one point our discussion turned to the current presidential race.  Sue mentioned at one point, that she remembered back in school, a teacher talking about a united America.  The teacher said something along the lines of:  whomever is in office, whether its a democrat or a republican, he is OUR president and we must stand behind him, and support him.  Tom also mentioned along the lines of:  If Obama becomes president, I hope we all want to vote for him for a second term.

One of my biggest frustrations with politics, is that people tie themselves so strongly to party lines, rather then actually looking closely at issues.  Whether we truly agree with a policy or not, we will fight it to the end if it is a policy of the other party.  We have been a country divided for the last few presidencies.   There has been a large amount of hatred towards the G.W.Bush terms.  Before that, there was a lot of disdain during the Clinton years.

I like the thoughts that were mentioned in that we need to be unified as a country, working towards the greater good of the country.  No matter who is in the office, they are still our chief officer.  We live in a great country, and part of that greatness comes from standing together-despite our differences.  If Obama is president, I hope America’s problems are addressed well enough that we all want him for 4 more years.  Same with McCain.  Whomever is President, has a big, stressful job, and deserves our support.

Every Time That Flag’s Unfurled

October 23rd, 2008

Starting in October 2008, there will be a more difficult test for people who want to become U.S.citizens.  From a list of 100 questions, 10 will be asked at random to help determine a person’s knowledge of U.S. history and government and whether he or she is allowed to become a U.S.citizen.

The following 10 questions are featured as part of the new test.  How many can you answer correctly?  The answers will be posted in the comments section.  While taking the test, please enjoy the great music video at the bottom of this post.

  1. How many amendments does the constitution have?
  2. The House of Representatives has how many voting members?
  3. Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the federal government.  What is one power of the federal government?
  4. Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the states.  What is one power of the states?
  5. What is one responsibility that is only for U.S.citizens?
